Popa Chubby – Peace, Love & Respect - BPCD 5089

This mountain of a guitar slingin’ man has put the power in the music and his politics on the line.  It seemed to me as I gave it the first through that he had regained the passion that he exhibited in his first major release, Booty and the Beast.  It’s strong, gritty blues, and just the way they should be, from the gut.  I may not have the same Top Ten Reason I Can’t Sleep At Night, but I empathized with his.  The Un-American Blues is relevant to the times, and unabashed in it political perspective.  My personal favorite on this CD is The Devil Gonna Drag You Down.  It just had the power and touch to make it a top choice.

I did have an opportunity to see Popa Chubby last week in Decatur, IL and even had a few words with him.  His stage performance surely outweighed his recording.  He was able to give a drunk some advice while making the audience laugh.  And the guitar work!!!  He has that uncommon lead riff timing that comes to the edge of the rhythm, then pulls you right back into the groove.  His bass player Nicholas D’Amato was impressive as well.

Popa Chubby is an original American urban bluesman and if you like your blues from the streets, you can’t go wrong with Peace, Love & Respect.
