Kenny Neal – Let Life Flow

Having seen Kenny Neal a couple years ago at the MVBS festival, I really looked forward to giving this new cd a spin.  I was surprised.  Kenny plays some very tasty guitar and writes some nice tunes.  Blues Leave Me Alone is an excellent song and his guitar work is worth writing a letter home about.

However, this cd is highly over-produced.  It has the old Motown, over-riding horns, layered feel, to it.  For example, Kenny’s Louisiana Stew never gets swampy because a slick horn section just won’t let it work.  His guitar playing doesn’t stand above the density of the backing music.

This cd may well please folks that enjoy the Soul R&B side of the genre, but it didn’t work for me.
